Plausible Implausible
Plausible Implausible is an art project using AI image generation that I made for an SVSU Faculty Learning Community (FLC). The images were made using Midjourney, an AI system that can generate and blend images unconstrained by human preconceptions. The goal was to create protean images that shift between different perceptual interpretations where the same element can be seen from multiple perspectives. For example, an area might be read as an edge of an infinity pool, a cliff edge, a reflection, or a passage through a plane of water.
This protean quality is intended to induce an unsettling undermining of normal visual perception. The purpose of this undermining is to illuminate the constraints of human pattern recognition, which can hinder fresh interpretation. I would like this project to encourage viewers to be open to novel organizations of reality as enabled by artificial intelligence.
My goal is to make images that are distinctly AI-generated, without chance of being derivative of human artists’ works. The project explores the unique creative potential of AI to produce perception-shifting images, unconstrained by habits of human perception.
